Evaluation Matters: The ABCs of Evaluations and Assessments for Students with Disabilities
Evaluations are an important component of understanding a student’s strengths and needs, but many times the types and results of evaluations can be confusing. This lunch and learn event will provide a practical understanding of evaluations and how they can be used as strategic tools to improve IEPs and educational outcomes. We will cover:
- The importance of evaluations in the special ed process
- What evaluations are appropriate for a student
- The components of a thorough evaluation
- Understanding scores on evaluations
- Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE) – who, what, when, why, & how
Speaker: Fiona Rattray, Parent Training & Information Center Specialist Putnam ILS/Westchester Independent Living Center
Fiona is a Parent Training & Information Center Specialist at Westchester Independent Living Center, dedicated to supporting students with disabilities and their families in navigating the education system. With a strong focus on equity and access, she works to ensure that every child receives the services and support they are entitled to. Fiona has a background in special education teaching, mentoring, and evaluating students with disabilities. She is also the parent of two adult children on the autism spectrum and a region director for the New York State PTA. Passionate about bridging gaps between schools and families, she brings both practical knowledge and a compassionate approach to this work.
