Description: Good decision-making skills are essential for a successful life as an adult. Too often, students with disabilities are not given strategic instruction and opportunities to practice and develop decision-making skills resulting in less independence and greater vulnerability as adults. In this webinar for parents, school professionals, service providers, and students, we will learn about the importance of decision-making skills and strategies for teaching children and youth with disabilities how to develop these skills. We will also learn about New York’s new Supported Decision-Making law and program as an alternative to guardianship for young adults.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the importance of good decision-making skills for students with developmental and emotional disabilities
- Learn practical ways to develop decision-making skills at school and home for students of all ages
- Understand what Supported Decision-Making is and how it works
- Foster self-determination and sound decision-making in adulthood.
Presenters:
Gina Riley, Ph.D, Assoc. Prof. of Special Education, CUNY – Hunter College
Christopher Lyons, CEO, AIM Services, Inc., New York’s Supported Decision-Making Program
